MEP Damien Carême (EELV) to present in an opinion piece to “Monde”, new ways to fight terrorist financing more effectively. At the moment, the European Parliament is voting on Tuesday 28 March on the three files that make up the anti-money laundering “package”.

Many of them are followers of money laundering, savvy exploiters of the gaps in multiple European laws. Among others, there are criminals, terrorists, soccer players' agents, oligarchs (especially Russians), arms traffickers, art “lovers”, etc. To discourage this fact, the European Parliament is preparing to adopt its position on the new anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism “package” proposed by the European Commission in July 2021.

In fact, the European Union took up the subject as early as 1991, in Mate implementing the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), in the form of an initial anti-money laundering directive. The European framework for the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing has since suffered from serious shortcomings despite its early desire. Thus, the proposed new texts aim to remedy this with two simple requirements. The first is to harmonize laws within the European Union (EU); and the second consists in strengthening surveillance on sectors and individuals that are particularly prone to money laundering.
