In a context of increased departures to the Canary Islands with their death toll, the Senegalese government validated a new national strategy to combat irregular migration on 27 July 2023.

The national strategy to combat irregular migration consists of five main areas. The aim is to drastically reduce these irregular departures by 2023. The Prime Minister, Amadou Ba, who chaired the meeting, announced that “the document of the national strategy to combat irregular migration sets out five axes that aim to drastically reduce irregular migration by 2033”. According to him, this strategy consists of prevention with employment and funding issues at the heart, border management and repression, which mainly targets traffickers and other conveyors, measures to support and protect migrants and the return and reintegration of irregular

The Prime Minister considers that the Senegalese State “intends to increase awareness among populations throughout the country, strengthen measures to control and monitor land, sea and air borders by equipping the Defence and Security Forces with substantial equipment, and complementary structures ;”
