Côte d'Ivoire is the world's leading producer of cocoa, a “brown gold”, which made the country successful during the 1970-1980s. But the fall in cocoa prices in the 1990s and, since then, its high volatility, the monopoly of a few buyers and the surge in input prices resulting from the war in Ukraine have taken a toll on these producers who are struggling to make a living from their crops. In 2023, the Café Cacao Council (CCC) increased the producer's purchase price by 9%. A kilo of cocoa is sold at 925 francs per kilo this year. Ivorian planters, small and fragile, are vulnerable to the slightest market shocks
