In a potential mega-deal that could reshape the global mining industry, mining giant BHP has offered to buy Anglo American, a longtime rival with a market capitalization of around $35 billion.

Anglo American reported that it had received a proposal from BHP which consisted of an all-stock offer in the company, subject to Anglo American separating the stakes in two units listed in South Africa, Anglo American Platinum and Kumba Iron Ore.
