Cameroon and the Islamic Development Bank signed a loan agreement worth around 80.5 billion FCFA (134 million USD). The purpose of this agreement is to finance the interconnection of its electrical network to that of Chad through the Cameroon and Chad Electrical Networks Interconnection Project (PIRECT

).

The implementation of the PIRECT should improve electrical energy supply, which is essential for the development of regions that still often lack basic infrastructure in terms of public and social services. Indeed, the financing granted by the IDB will be used, according to the Minister of Economy, Planning and Land Use, Alamine Ousmane Mey, “for the construction of 4 high-voltage electrical transformer stations Bookman Old Style”, "serif">”. The project, whose overall cost is 557.5 billion FCFA (928 million USD), is also supported by the African Development Bank (BAD) to the tune of 169.2 billion FCFA, the European Union to the tune of 19.7 billion FCFA, as well as the 2 countries concerned, including 56.2 billion FCFA provided by Cameroon.

The objective of PIRECT is to strengthen the energy infrastructures of Chad and Cameroon, to facilitate their integration into the framework of the Central African Energy Pool (PEAC). It will allow Cameroon to become an exporter of electricity, with an estimated supply of 100 megawatts to Chad, and will

end in 2027.
