Moldavia confirmed its European trajectory on Sunday by renewing its president Maia Sandu after a tense election amid suspicions of Russian interference, two weeks after the victory of the “yes” vote in an EU referendum.

Brussels reacted very quickly, with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, saying she was “happy to continue working” with Maia Sandu for a “European future”.

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the fact that “democracy” had “triumphed over all interferences and maneuvers.”
