As markets begin a crucial week in terms of the trade war launched by the United States against all of its trading partners, European stock markets are expected to start trading on Monday in the red.

President Donald Trump spent most of the last week playing down expectations about his April 2 reciprocal tariff plan. But in recent days, Donald Trump has been pushing his team to be more aggressive, according to the Wall Street Journal, encouraging them to develop plans that would apply higher tariff rates to a wider set of countries. The latter reinforced this discourse on Sunday evening, declaring that it would target “essentially all” of the United States' trading partners with tariffs in one way or another.
The average US tariff rate in 2025 is expected to increase by 15 percentage points, 5 percentage points more than expected, according to Goldman Sachs forecasts. “We continue to think that the risk associated with the April 2 tariffs is greater than many market participants had previously assumed,” Goldman Sachs said.

The rate of the two-year US Treasury bond fell by 6 basis points, to 3.86%, around 7:45am, while that of the 10-year stock fell by 3 basis points (0.03 percentage point), to 4.21%.

The greenback fell by 0.6% against the Japanese currency, to 148.98 yen. Around 7:45am, the euro rose by 0.1% to 1.0837 dollars.

The May contract for soft light crude (WTI) listed on Nymex lost 31 cents, or 0.5%, to $68.59 per barrel. While the one at the same maturity on North Sea Brent listed in London sold 30 cents, or 0.4%, to 72.46 dollars per barrel, around 7:45am
