The President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States announced that the new community currency called Eco will be launched in 2027.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Touray confirmed during a round table concluding the first Sahel Governance Forum that the conditions necessary for the launch of the ECOWAS single currency had already been met.

Dr. Touray said, “we need to put in place innovative strategies to strengthen social cohesion and strengthen relationships between states and citizens. In the same vein, we must give priority to the development of governance through the establishment of strong democratic institutions — institutions that promote responsibility, discipline, and effective management of resources.” According to him, “discipline and results are values whose importance cannot be overestimated. They are not optional; they are fundamental.”

For the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodlkuck Jonathan, it will be necessary to put in place mechanisms that will make it possible to fight terrorism together, promote climate-resilient agriculture, and provide real economic opportunities for young people in order to give them hope for a better future in their country and prevent them from embarking on a desperate migration adventure
