A decree ratifying an agreement for a total amount of 40.8 billion francs, concluded on May 18, 2020 between the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, for the financing of the project reinforcement of electrical system structures and access to electricity phase I (PROSER I) was adopted today by the Council of Ministers in Bongouanou.
In addition to contributing globally to the development of works in the national electricity system, this funding is specifically intended for the extension of the medium voltage networks for the electrification of 1,338 rural localities and the securing of 11 energy transmission stations to ensure the continuous supply of electricity to the populations.
The electrification of these localities will bring the national coverage rate to 100%. In addition, note that from 1994 to 2000, Côte d'Ivoire only had 652 electrified localities while from 2001 to 2010, only 879 localities were electrified. On the other hand, from 2011 to 2020, 3452 localities benefited from electricity. In total in 2011, the national electrification coverage rate stood at 33.1%. At the end of 2020, we will be at 79.6% with a projection at the end of 2025 of 100%. The electrification of these localities within the framework of this project will bring the national coverage rate to 100%.
In addition, the Council adopted a decree setting a ceiling on the prices of certain consumer products. Given the difficult socio-economic context caused by the health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this decree, issued after the opinion of the Competition Commission, extends for three (03) additional months, the rice price cap measure , sugar, concentrated tomato and refined oil in order to block speculative practices on these consumer products.
