Yesterday, the African Development Bank (AfDB) announced that on February 4 it had approved a grant of $
6.85 million to the African Civil Aviation Commission (Cafac) for the implementation of the Single Market
African Air Transport (MUTAA). The African Development Fund, a window for interest loans The AfDB concessional bears 89.5% of the overall project cost, estimated at $7.65 million, the rest (10.4%)
being co-financed by Cafac.
Cafac will thus be able to set up the appropriate institutional and regulatory framework and raise awareness
the opinion to the successful implementation of the MUTAA, underlines the afDB communiqué.
The 36-month project consists of three components: cafac's institutional strengthening;
support for the sustainable development of air transport in Africa by strengthening security,
safety and environmental protection; project management, monitoring and evaluation.
THE MUTAA is expected to improve access for Africans (more than 1.2 billion people) to air transport,
thus promoting regional integration and stimulating trade and tourism between the countries of the continent.
This project is the first multilateral support granted to Cafac.
MUTAA is seen as a crucial logistics infrastructure and a facilitator of voucher operation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), supplemented by the Protocol on
the free movement of people and goods and the African Passport. AU Vision 2063 sets the goal
ambitious to increase intra-African trade growth from 10% in 2012 to around 50% by 2045, thanks to deeper integration.
The MUTAA was established in January 2018 as the first flagship project of the AU's Agenda 2063.
