Could the single “Eco” currency for the countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) be put into circulation at the beginning of 2020? Nothing is certain at the moment.

It will be difficult to start using the single currency of ECOWAS, "Eco" in 2020, as decided in June 2019 by the heads of state of the community space.

Among the countries belonging to this institution in the sub-region, only Togo, according to the Nigerian Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, would meet the requirements for the adoption of a single currency with regard to convergence, the flexible exchange, the fight against insecurity and inter-state collaboration.

But to reflect on the means of putting this single currency into service, the ECOWAS Heads of State are meeting on December 21 in Abuja to examine the recommendations on the “Eco” regime.

“The recommendations report is ready to be submitted to the Heads of State,” said Zainab Ahmed.

As a prelude to this meeting of ECOWAS Heads of State, a meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the sub-regional institution was held a few days ago in Abuja.
