To this end, they demand a greater share of the cocoa marketing contracts.
Cocoa traders from Côte d'Ivoire, the world's largest producer, denounce and demand an end to the monopoly of chocolate multinationals. "It is absolutely necessary that the six multinationals which buy in Côte d'Ivoire through their subsidiaries have the obligation to systematically allocate 20% to 30% of each of their contracts to Ivorian processors and exporters", declared to AFP Fabien Guei, spokesperson for the Group of Ivorian traders (GNI).
For Fabien Guei, it is not a question of removing them from the Ivorian market, but of allowing Ivorian operators to participate durably in the external marketing of their country's cocoa and this in a fairer and more balanced way.
The group demands to "end the monopoly" of the Swiss group Barry Callebaut, world leader in industrial chocolate, Olam (Singapore), Cargill (United States), Ecom (Switzerland) and the French groups Sucden and Touton.
