The consequences of the new coronavirus are not only in human lives, but also in billions of CFA francs. It is aware of this that the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) adopted on March 21 a series of measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on banks.

It has increased the amount it makes available to banks each week as a resource of 340 billion CFA francs, bringing it to 4,750 billion in total. Companies in WAEMU countries that can no longer repay their loans due to economic recession will benefit from a postponement of maturities, if they wish, for their loans, for a period of 3 months renewable once, without interest charges, fees or late payment penalties.

The above measures and the clearance of domestic debt will allow Malian banks to breathe. However, if the pandemic continues for a long time, binding choices will be imposed on them.

" Banks that have organic sizes will survive, with the support of groups and other subsidiaries, but some will be forced to recapitalize if the health crisis goes beyond three to six months ," warns Alassane Sissoko, Director of UBA Mali.

According to the CEO, the central bank's decision to double the capital for WAEMU banks since 2007 will allow them to cope with the crisis without going bankrupt. However, outstanding debts will alienate their capital.
