The slowdown in the United Kingdom economy has amplified a downturn in the currency that has already been in place for several weeks. The pound sterling thus fell to 87.215 pence per euro, a level to which it had not returned since February 2021. Around 09:15 GMT, it gave way to 0.54% to 87.10 pence.
Statistics released earlier today show that British gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 0.2% in July compared with the previous month, while Economists surveyed by Reuters expected growth of 0.4%.
