The growth of economic activity is now expected at 0.7% in 2020 by the Togolese authorities. This is what we remember from a speech delivered by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Sani Yaya, on December 18, 2020 in front of the parliament during the vote on the 2021 budget.

"Like other countries around the world, the Covid-19 pandemic is putting the Togolese economy in an unprecedented shock. However, our economy is proving resilient thanks to the government's appropriate response measures," he said. Adding that "many countries are experiencing a recession in their economies." For the year 2021, the minister expects growth of 4.7% "provided that the pandemic is quickly controlled".

Until then, Lomé was already projecting a deceleration in activity, with an economic growth rate revised to 1.3% in 2020, against an initial forecast of 5.5%, after the 5.3% recorded in 2019. "The pandemic certainly has negative impacts on the social and economic. Nevertheless, it teaches us lessons that we can learn, including rethinking our economic model to make it less dependent on the outside world and therefore more resilient to external shocks. This new direction of economic policy undoubtedly leads us to revise and update our National Development Plan (NDP)," said Minister Sani Yaya on August 25, 2020 at an official event.

It should be noted that the government has adopted this December 18, 2020 by the parliament, the budget of the year 2021 which is balanced in resources and expenses at 1,521.6 billion CFA francs (about 28.5 million USD), slightly down compared to the 2020 financial year, while budgetary revenues stood at $839.6 billion and budgetary expenditures at $1120.4 billion. This results in a budgetary deficit of 280.8 billion, representing 6.1% of GDP, entirely financed by the surplus balance of treasury operations.
