In the currency zone, the increase in the number of accounts reflects the increasing adoption of digital financial services, in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. La Côte d' Ivoire et le Sénégal register the largest number of accounts.

Within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA), the number of electronic money accounts reached 131 million as of December 31, 2021. They are up by 39%, or 37 million new accounts registered compared to the year 2020, which was 94 million. This increase in the number of electronic money accounts reflects, according to the Central Bank of Banque centrale des Etats de l' Afrique de l' Ouest (Bceao) , “the increasing adoption by populations, digital financial services, initiated during the lockdown period linked to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The Bceao published in its 2021 annual report on the evolution of digital financial services in UEMOA mentioning “that a quarterly average of 8.77 million electronic money accounts was observed, representing an evolution of more than 3 million per month”.
