On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) issued a press release on the refusal of used banknotes or smooth coins in member countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). An attitude that is considered an offence.

“Any refusal to accept a banknote or coin that has legal tender status and can be released in a UEMOA Member State constitutes an offence punishable by the texts in force. ”, the press release states. Indeed, users are invited to exchange mutilated or torn bills as well as smooth or altered coins at the BCEAO counters.
