The general price level fell by 0.1% nationally. Core inflation (monthly change in the index excluding energy, excluding fresh produce) increased by 0.5%. The price index for "Fresh products" increased by 0.8%, while the prices for energy products fell by 4.6%.
With regard to origin, the prices of local products rose by 0.4% while they fell by 0.3% for imported products.
From the point of view of sectoral classification, the increase in the general level of prices is the result of the increase in the prices of products in the primary (+1.4%) and secondary (+0.1%) sectors lessened by the drop prices of products from the tertiary sector (-0.2%).

The price level for the month of May 2020 increased by 1.3% compared to that of February 2020 (quarterly evolution). Inseed attributes this increase mainly to the increase in the prices of products in the consumer functions "Food products and non-alcoholic beverages" (+6.0%), "Miscellaneous goods and services" (+2.6%), "Articles clothing and footwear” (+0.8%), “Health” (+1.0%), “Restaurants and Hotels” (+0.2%), “Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance” (+0.6%) and “Tobacco and narcotics” (+0.2%).
From the point of view of secondary classifications and in relation to the state of products, the increase in the general level of prices in quarterly variation is to be credited to the evolution of the prices of "Fresh products" (+7.8 %), products “Excluding Energy and Fresh Products” (+0.8%) mitigated by “Energy” products (-10.5%).
With regard to origin, this quarterly variation is mainly explained by the increase in the prices of local products (+2.2%).
The quarterly increase in the general level of prices is induced, from the point of view of sustainability, by the increase in the prices of “Non-durable” products (+2.9%); “Durables” (+0.9%) and “Semi-durables” (+0.7%) products curbed by the drop in “Services” prices (-1.8%). The respective variations in the prices of products from the primary (+10.1%), secondary (+0.5%) sectors cushioned by the prices of products from the tertiary sector (-1.8%) contributed to the quarterly increase in the level price general.
Year-over-year
Year-on-year (compared to May 2019), the general price level increased by 1.2% due to the consumption functions “Food and non-alcoholic beverages” (+1.6%); “Communication” (+4.3%); “Clothing and footwear” (+2.2%); “Miscellaneous goods and services” (+3.8%); “Restaurants and Hotels” (+0.8%); “Teaching” (+4.9%); “Health” (+2.2%); “Furniture, household items and routine household maintenance” (+1.7%) and “Leisure and culture” (+0.5%);
As for the secondary nomenclatures and in relation to the condition of the products, the increase observed year-on-year is the result of the increase in the prices of the products
“Excluding energy and fresh products” (+2.0%) and “fresh products” (+1.1%) cushioned by lower prices for “energy” products (-6.4%)
With regard to origin, this annual change is mainly explained by the rise in prices of “local” products (+1.7%). As for durability, the progression of the general level of prices at the national level was influenced by the increase in the prices of “Non-durable” products (+1.0%); “Services” (+1.9%) and “Semi-durable” products (+1.9%) mitigated by the prices of “Durable” products (-0.6%).
With regard to the production sectors, the annual rise in the general level of prices stems from the increase in the prices of products from the “secondary” sectors (+0.7%); "tertiary" (+1.9%) and prices in the "primary" sector (+1.5%).
The inflation rate calculated on the basis of the average indices for the last twelve months at the national level is 0.8% in May 2020 (0.7% the previous month).
