The amount of deposits collected by financial systems
(SFD) of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) stood at 1,473.7
billion FCFA (about 2.357 billion dollars) in the fourth quarter of 2019, APA learned on Tuesday
with the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO).
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2018 when they amounted to 1,243.2 billion FCFA, these deposits collected
experienced an increase of 18.5%. This increase was recorded in Mali (+31.0%), in Burkina
(+22.9%), in Ivory Coast (+19.8%), in Togo (+18.4%), in Senegal (+16.5%), in Niger (+14.8%) and at
Benin (+5.1%). On the other hand, BCEAO data indicate that a decline has been noted in Guinea-Bissau
(-6.2%).
Sight deposits remain preponderant with a share of 59.2% where time deposits and other
deposits constitute 19.9% and 20.9% respectively.
Men constitute the majority of savers, totaling 50.5% of the savings mobilized by DFS
against 26.5% for women and 23.0% for groups.
The average amount of savings per customer was 101,266 FCFA at the end of December 2019 against 89,442
FCFA for the fourth quarter of 2018.
For all WAEMU SFDs, savings collected represent 5.4% of all deposits held
by credit institutions.
