Former Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz announced that he was prevented from traveling abroad on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. He denounced an illegal measure.

Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz is due to be tried starting January 25 with 11 other officials from his regime for alleged corruption according to a judicial source. Indeed, he was indicted in March 2021, along with several high-ranking figures, for these alleged acts that were allegedly committed when he ruled the country from 2008 to 2019. With him are his sons-in-law, two former prime ministers, and several former ministers and businessmen on the list.

“ I was at the airport to travel, but I was prevented by the political police, who said they had received instructions to do so, although I am not subject to judicial review or to any other provision that could rsquo; ban travel,” he said in a video shared on his Facebook page.

“Only two days ago, someone who was on the same list as me was able to travel. Apparently, this bad system of mismanagement in place is treating me badly, which is leading the country astray,” he denounced.
