While traders were waiting for fourth-quarter gross domestic product figures and data from the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) survey, the South African rand was slightly weaker in early trading on Tuesday.

At 0635 GMT, the rand traded at 19.0725 against the US dollar, about 0.1% weaker than its previous close. According to analysts at ETM Analytics, a rise in the price of gold, one of South Africa's main export commodities, could help boost the rand this week.
