On Monday 17 June, European Union leaders ended a discussion on the appointment of the Union's top officials for the next five years, without reaching an agreement.

During a dinner in Brussels, the 27 national leaders of the EU discussed who should lead the powerful executive body that is the European Commission, who should chair European Council meetings and who should occupy the position of foreign policy officer. But no nomination was made as the current President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said they needed more time.

According to the current President of the European Council, the pan-European political parties had made proposals concerning the posts and that more work would have to be done to reach an agreement. Leaders are due to take a formal decision at a summit on 27 and 28 June. All 27 members of the Commission, including the person responsible for foreign policy, must also obtain the support of Parliament.
