The Abydos solar photovoltaic power plant, developed by the Dubai-based company AMEA Power, and with a capacity of 500 megawatts, was completed in just 18 months. The Emirati company AMEA, owner of the project, aims to complete the Ras Shukair wind energy project in the first quarter of 2026, as well as to soon produce green hydrogen in Egypt

The solar photovoltaic power plant should generate 1,500 gigawatt hours of clean energy per year, enough to power around 300,000 homes, while reducing CO2 emissions by 782,300 tons, while reducing CO2 emissions by 782,300 tons, according to AMEA Power.

The project is an “essential step” in renewable energy production in Egypt and “is part of Egypt's national strategy to reduce its dependence on traditional energy sources,” Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said at the inauguration.

The project will also support government efforts to reduce summer power outages, he added.

These became common during periods of high heat. Last summer, Egypt had to suffer daily injuries of up to three hours, due to the intensive use of air conditioners

The solar power plant “will accelerate Egypt's green energy strategy and help it deal with electricity shortages that have occurred over the past year,” said AMEA's president, Hussain Al Nowais.

The project was funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Dutch Bank FMO, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
