Missile fire: an intercontinental ballistic missile launched by North Korea

On Friday, with Seoul, Tokyo, and Washington expecting an imminent nuclear test from Pyongyang, North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that fell off the coast of Japan. It's the latest episode in a record series of projectile launches in recent weeks.

Referring to the Korean name for the Sea of Japan, the South Korean military said it had “detected a long-range ballistic missile presumed to be launched around 10:15am (0115 GMT) from the Sunan area in Pyongyang heading to the East Sea.”

According to information from Tokyo, the missile flew about 1,000 km and Japanese forces did not attempt to destroy it in flight. According to Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada, the projectile reached a maximum altitude of 6,000 km. He deduced that it was an “ICBM-class ballistic missile, although further details are being analyzed.”
