In 2018, Ghana became Africa's top gold producer. According to figures disclosed by the World Bank, it dethroned South Africa, which fell to third place on the continent.

158 tons came out of Ghanaian gold mines in 2018. An increase of 15% compared to the previous year which allows the former Gold Coast to rob South Africa of the first place on the continent.

For several years, the "Ghanaian golden boys" have been multiplying projects and substantial discoveries. Ghana has thus returned to the high volumes of the 1980s, well above the four million ounces marketed.

Paradoxically, if Ghana takes first place from South Africa, it is nevertheless South African companies, such as Gold Field and Anglogold, which are the most active on its territory, ahead of the Americans and Canadians.

The Ghanaian subsoil has not yet delivered its full potential

The success of the gold sector is also due to a complete reorganization in recent years and better control of operators. Many illegal miners, from China and Russia in particular, have had to cease their activities in recent years.

The Ghanaian subsoil does not yet seem to have delivered its full potential, unlike South Africa, whose gold sector is in full decline. The veins are running out, forcing operators to dig deeper and deeper. South Africa could no longer produce gold within ten to fifteen years, according to some estimates.
