Pinned for its laxity in the fight against money laundering, Swedbank has just been sentenced to
pay a fine of 4 billion crowns. It is imposed by the Swedish Supervisory Authority
financier. This represents around €360 million. The establishment announced on March 23 that it does not
would not challenge that decision. The investigation was conducted jointly by the regulatory authorities of
Sweden and Estonia, Swedbank being very present in the Baltic countries. This investigation highlighted "
significant shortcomings in the control of anti measures of money", in swedbank's Baltic subsidiaries. The facility was suspected of involvement in the
Danske Bank money laundering scandal. In this scandal, the judicial investigation reached the
conclusion that between 2014 and 2019, customers of the bank had made a total of nearly 37 billionbr euros of transfers, via the Baltic subsidiaries.
These transactions are strongly suspected of money laundering, even if the investigators did not have
still able to prove it. In February 2019, Swedish radio station SVT revealed that accounts domiciled with
Swedbank was also involved in the money laundering case involving Danske Bank. On these accounts
at Swedbank, nearly 4 billion euros of dirty money were allegedly laundered. In several countries,
investigations against Swedbank are still ongoing.
