The African Union and the African Development Bank (AfDB) organized on the sidelines of the 38th AU Summit, a high-level strategic dialogue on the acceleration of visa-free traffic for the transformation and integration of Africa.

Indeed, the Africa Visa Openness Index is a joint initiative of the African Development Bank and the African Union to monitor progress in facilitating visa-free travel. 2024 was marked by significant changes in the AVIO scores of 54 countries on the continent. 17 countries improved their AVIO score over the past year, building on the 15 countries that showed improvement in the last edition. According to the latest data, 28% of intra-African trips are now visa-free, an improvement from 20% in 2016. In addition, 25% of African travelers can get a visa upon arrival, although this figure has slightly decreased from 26% in 2023.
