The Beninese government recently launched an agricultural insurance pilot project. This yield-index project aims to cover agricultural to yield-index aimed at covering 100,000 farmers.

The agricultural insurance pilot project, which insured 11,000 rice farmers in 2024, offering them financial compensation against climate-related losses, aims to protect farmers against production losses due to climatic hazards (drought, floods, diseases of crops, etc.).

The index is based on agricultural data and average yield measures estimated from technological tools (satellite remote sensing, weather sensors, agricultural modeling) over a given area.

Unlike traditional insurance, this type of insurance relies on objective and measurable indicators, called indices, to measure agricultural production in a region. The advantages of such an initiative for beneficiaries include the speed of compensation.

The other advantage is the reduced cost of the operation.

A fin 2025, the 100,000 Beninese farmers will have insurance coverage in all agricultural development centers in the country.
