The Nigeria Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and WeLight, a distributed renewable energy (DRE) company active in Africa, signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday, March 10, 2025, on Monday, March 10, 2025, a memorandum of understanding worth an estimated USD 200 million.

The agreement between REA and WeLight aims to connect around 1.5 to 2 million people from remote regions of the West African country. Indeed, through this agreement, WeLight will be responsible for developing and operating a fleet of 400 mini-grids to supply electricity to the areas targeted by the program. He will also be responsible for setting up 50 MetroGrids, which are small-scale energy generation and distribution systems composed of variable renewable energies, energy storage systems, and distribution systems. For its part, the REA aims through this project to accelerate its efforts to bring reliable energy supplies to rural and underserved regions in Nigeria
