Tanzania had ordered several locomotives, wagons, and passenger cars in order to strengthen passenger transport capabilities on the SGR network. The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) expects to receive 18 new cars this year

The 18 deliveries will be added to 71 units already received, some of which have already undergone technical tests and others are already operational on the first section of the network. An order for 1430 units had in fact been placed with the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC). The TRC said it had received a total of 264 at the end of December 2024, of which 200 will be deployed for containerized cargo and 64 for bulk cargo shipments. According to figures released in December 2024, the network carried nearly 1.17 million passengers in 6 months of operation

According to the government, the Tanzanian SGR, whose extensions are in progress, is planned to strengthen the mass transport offer, especially in urban areas, and support the country's ambition to become a logistics service hub for landlocked border countries, in this case Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which are important customers of the port of Dar es Salaam.
