Annual consumer price inflation in Egyptian cities rose again in April, reaching 13.9%, compared to 13.6% in March, according to data released this Saturday by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
On a monthly basis, prices rose by 1.5% between the end of March and the end of April 2025, reflecting the continuing pressure on the consumer basket, even if some indicators show signs of stabilization. In particular, food and drink prices slowed, registering a decrease of 1.5% over one month, while they had been a main driver of inflation in the previous months
.On an annual basis, food products remained up 6%, illustrating the persistence of tensions in the sector, despite a slight economic downturn.
The Egyptian economy remains marked by the protracted consequences of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which began in 2022, which caused a brutal shock to supply chains and caused billions of dollars in foreign investment to flee from Egyptian government bonds.
The latest data from the Central Bank of Egypt confirm a slowdown in money supply growth (M2 aggregate), which stood at 25.8% at the end of March, compared to 33.9% at the end of February, against 33.9% at the end of February, its highest level ever recorded. This slowdown is explained by a more rigorous monetary policy, put in place since March 2024 to contain structural imbalances
