Under the leadership of the African Union, African countries are meeting in Lomé, Togo from 12 to 14 May 2025 to discuss a possible common position to be adopted in the face of creditors on the continent.

The High-Level Debt Conference is organized by the Department of Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Tourism, Industry and Mining of the Union africaine (UA) . Under the theme “The African Public Debt Management Agenda: Restoring and Maintaining Debt Sustainability”, this conference aims to explore sustainable and sovereign solutions to deal with growing debt on the African continent.

This meeting brought together over 500 participants, including heads of state, finance ministers, central bank governors, central bank governors, development partners, and representatives of civil society.

Exchanges focus in particular on the reform of sovereign debt restructuring frameworks, the use of sustainable financing, transparency, debt governance and the fight against illicit financial flows. According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, more than twenty African countries are in a situation of over-indebtedness or at high risk

.

For his part, the President of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, emphasized the urgency of “establishing a rigorous governance of public debt, supported by strong African solidarity and a balanced dialogue with international creditors”.
