Nigeria and Brazil signed a $1 billion agreement on Tuesday, June 24, to strengthen their cooperation in several strategic sectors, including agriculture, food security, energy and defense. The announcement was made at the opening of the second Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism

in Abuja.

This strategic partnership aims to modernise Nigerian agriculture, which is still largely dominated by subsistence practices. “We are mobilizing more than $1 billion to provide mechanized agricultural equipment, train farmers and set up service centers across the country,” Mr. Shettima said on the social network X. The project should improve productivity and reduce the country's dependence on food imports, in a context of strong population growth. With a population of over 220 million people, Nigeria is seeking to strengthen its food security.

Land constraints, linked to private or communal ownership of land, hamper large-scale exploitation. By modernizing agricultural practices, Abuja hopes to trigger a structural transformation of the sector and create jobs. The energy component is not to be outdone. According to Vice President Shettima, this partnership also marks a turning point in the country's energy strategy: “We are implementing long-awaited reforms to attract investments in gas, refining and renewable energies. ” Mr. Alckmin's visit to Abuja testifies to the strengthening of South-South relationships between two major emerging economies with converging ambitions. Brazil brings its expertise in mechanized agriculture here, while Nigeria sees this cooperation as a lever to support its goal of becoming a $1 trillion economy by 2030, through reforms in agriculture, education, energy and finance
