The national workshop to finalize the project to create the West African Institute of Mathematics of Guinea (IMAG) opened on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 in Conakry. This meeting was chaired by the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation, Alpha Bacar Barry

.

The workshop brought together a committee of high-level experts from countries in the subregion as well as technical and financial partners. Dr. Karamo Sita Diallo, a teacher-researcher at the University of Labé and head of the Statistics, Evaluation and Project Section, said in her presentation of the project: “we have been steering this file for two months with the support of the Secretary General of the Ministry, and the progress is significant. The creative project is now ready, the models are available. We chose to name this structure the West African Institute of Mathematics.” According to Alpha Bacar Barry, Guinea faces significant challenges in the field of mathematics, including a shortage of qualified teachers in middle and high schools, which hampers the quality of education. According to the latter, “the Institute aims to meet these challenges by training high-level managers capable of supporting the development of higher education, research and key scientific sectors such as engineering, finance , artificial intelligence, and agriculture.”

The objective is to establish a regional center of excellence based in Guinea, dedicated to the training of teachers and researchers able to meet the mathematical challenges specific to West Africa. The Institute will in particular develop two-cycle master programs (strengthening the bases then thematic specialization) with courses oriented towards research or teaching, as well as a doctorate co-supervised locally and internationally. An excellent license and continuing education for practising teachers are also planned.
