Kenya has obtained additional funding from China Exim Bank for the extension of its SGR network that should reach Uganda.

Kenya aims to consolidate its position as the main port and logistics hub in East Africa, a status bitterly contested by Tanzania, which is currently implementing one of the largest railway projects in Africa. According to the Minister of Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, the financing will be complemented by the Kenya Railway Development Fund and the African Development Bank (AfDB). This binational railway project aims to improve accessibility to the port of Mombasa for imports and exports from neighboring landlocked countries, in particular Uganda, which has a historic trade relationship with Kenya

Work should resume in July on sections 2B and 2C, whose construction estimated at 5.3 billion USD had been suspended due to lack of funding, according to a schedule unveiled by the Ministry of Transport.
