In Morocco, the agricultural sector contributes 11% to GDP and employs around 31% of the active population. While the country has been facing a persistent drought for several years, initiatives to strengthen the climate resilience of the productive system are multiplying

.

The World Bank has approved $250 million in financing for the implementation of the Agri-Food Systems Transformation Program in Morocco. In a statement published on Thursday, December 19 on its website, the financial institution indicates that this initiative aims to strengthen the climate resilience of the agri-food sector and improve food and health security.

With this in mind, the World Bank recently approved $250 million in financing to support Morocco in the implementation of an ambitious Program to Transform Agri-Food Systems. This initiative, aligned with the “Green Generation 2020-2030” plan, aims to modernise the sector while strengthening its resilience in the face of climate change. Planned interventions focus on the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, the development of insurance systems to mitigate climate risks, as well as the effective management of water resources and soils. The project also includes the expansion of organic farming on 25,000 hectares and the improvement of health standards in more than 1,200 food outlets across the country.

The aim is to reach over 1.3 million people, including 120,000 farmers, by offering them tools and training to improve their practices and yields. In addition, Moroccan consumers will benefit from better food safety and increased quality of local products. According to Ahmadou Moustapha Ndiaye, World Bank country director for the Maghreb, this program will not only create green jobs in rural areas, but also strengthen Morocco's

food sovereignty.
